The Theory Exam
Knowing how the exam works lets you plan your study. This book is built from the public question bank, so everything the exam tests from that bank is covered here.
What do the questions look like?
Section titled “What do the questions look like?”- Each question has between two and five answer options, and exactly one is correct.
- About two in three questions come with a picture, so learn to read the picture before the options.
- Many questions name no vehicle or place, and only say “in this situation”. The picture holds the facts.
Common trap: Read the question to the end. “Who passes second?” and “Who passes first?” can use the same picture and have different answers.
How should I work through a picture question?
Section titled “How should I work through a picture question?”- Find the signs, lights and markings first. They decide who may do what.
- Work out where you are: a built-up area, a main road, or which lane.
- Look for arrows and flashing indicators. They show what each vehicle intends to do.
- Only then read the options.
How do I know when I am ready?
Section titled “How do I know when I am ready?”Test yourself on questions from every chapter, not only the ones you like. Intersections and signs make up a large part of the question bank, so give them the most time.
Extra: The exam format, as reported
Not from the question bank.
Published reports describe a test of 20 questions in 30 minutes, with at most two mistakes allowed. These come from a news report and a guide for new residents, not from the Road Police. Confirm the current format with the Road Police before your exam, because it may change.
Key points
Section titled “Key points”- Every question has exactly one correct answer.
- Read the picture first: signs, lights, markings, then position.
- Read the question to the end before you look at the options.
- Check the current exam format with the Road Police.
